How Kids Can Play Sudoku (6×6)

How to teach 6×6 Sudoku and play it together with your child.

Start with 6×6

On a 6×6 grid, you place the numbers 1 to 6 once each in every row, column and box, where each box is 2 rows high and 3 columns wide. There are fewer numbers than on a 9×9 grid, so there is less to keep in mind.

Things you can say

Ask about just one thing to look for at a time, such as "Which number is still missing from this row?" or "Where in this row could this number go?" That makes it easier for your child to find the answer alone.

When they make a mistake

On this site, wrong numbers are shown in red. When something turns red, look back over that row, column and box together. You can also use the Hint button to fill in the correct number for one cell.

The next stage

Once 6×6 feels comfortable, move on to Easy on the 9×9 grid.
